Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader Swarup Biswas, brother of a former minister, was arrested late last night from New Alipore on charges including indecent behavior towards a woman and extortion. The arrest has sparked widespread public anger and protests outside the New Alipore police station, with demonstrators chanting slogans against Biswas.
The complaint against Swarup Biswas was lodged at the New Alipore police station. Following the complaint, police arrested the former president of the Federation of Cine Technicians & Workers of Eastern India. He was taken for a medical examination and is expected to be produced in court today.
Following the arrest, BJP MLA Sourav Sikdar reacted sharply, stating, “What the police are doing is a procedure, and he has been sent to the central lock-up at night. One must admit that our party workers here have had long-standing accumulated grievances. Because this Biswas brothers has been grabbing land and houses day after day, and running a mafia raj in the film industry, people’s spontaneous anger has erupted now that the police have arrested him.”
Sikdar further appealed for calm, saying, “I am telling everyone to ensure everything happens peacefully, so that no one takes the law into their own hands. And as the IC of the police station has said, all complaints should be submitted in writing to the police station. Justice will be served through legal channels. Not a single complaint will be ignored. And if someone has committed a crime, no one will be spared in this government; this is the Chief Minister’s clear directive.”
Swarup Biswas was initially held at the New Alipore police station after his arrest around 10 PM. He was then taken for a medical examination. While he was expected to be brought back to the New Alipore police station, police decided against it due to the public’s strong reaction. Consequently, he was transferred to Lalbazar, where he will be held overnight before being presented in court tomorrow.
